This month's newsletter, "God's Hands"

We welcome back the choir to the Service of Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m.  Warm up with Sacred Harp singing at 9:15 a.m.  Compline begins again at 8:30 p.m.

Sunday School will resume on September 19 at 9:15 a.m.

We look forward to the Hymn Festrival on Sunday September 26, celebrating twenty years of mutual ministry between Pastor Senn and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Sunday, September 12, 2010, at 9:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall

Anne Heider and Steve Warner will lead a demonstration and singing school of the tradition known as "sacred harp."  Taking its name from The Sacred Harp, the most widely used book of shape-note music, first published in 1844 and still in print, sacred harp consists of unaccompanied, a cappella singing in four-part harmony of religious texts set to "shaped notes," a pedagogical device invented in 1799 to teach musical literacy.  Assisted by friends from the Chicago Sacred Harp Singers, Anne will explain the shape-note system, and she and Steve will teach parts to two hymns from The Sacred Harp so that all attendees can join the singing.  By the end of the forty-five minute singing school, Anne and Steve hope that everyone will be able to join in singing one of the most delightful kinds of shape-note hymns, a so-called "fuguing tune."

There are many joys to experience at Immanuel!

Café Immanuel™ continues to provide a glorious breakfast on the first Sunday of every month between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. There are programs in Fellowship Hall on other Sundays of the month to build on what Café Immanuel™ has accomplished:

  • Showing that we are joyful about our hospitality to the community
  • Demonstrating the wonderful and unique talents of our members
  • Giving members something special to invite their friends to experience at Immanuel
  • Providing a warm and welcoming fellowship before worship

We can call Café Immanuel™ "The Joy of Hospitality."  But we have other joys to offer as well.

"The Joy of Music" is a series of musical recitals that will take place on the second Sunday of every month, at 9:15 a.m.

"The Joy of Learning" is a series of informational presentations given by members who are experienced teachers or presenters. These will take place on third Sundays, also at 9:15 a.m.

"The Joy of Worship" is a series of presentations and discussions on the purpose, development, and structure of our historic liturgy - same time, same place, but on the fourth Sunday of every month.

Each of these new events will conclude with a light refreshment. Of course, every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. we celebrate the Joy of the Risen Christ in worship, so let Joy be your theme this year at Immanuel.
